An obvious benefit to all these plans is better integration with people versus the tradition standalone library. For tenants and the community the library could better serve as a work space. Families with children living in the building benefit from a close adjacency to a learning resource. The downside, as with any thing that has a lot of components, if one fails there is an impact on the rest. And having these branches attached to a larger structure makes them more potentially vulnerable to replacement by a retail lease through legal wrangling.”

Library leaders nationwide are adapting to this shift by reimagining the library as an engaged community center. The role of librarians is being re-branded to reflect their expertise as content curators and trusted navigators in an ever-expanding ocean of information — in whatever format it may exist.
